Outdoor Spring Maintenance Checklist

    • Look for sagging gutters, loose window frames or siding, deteriorating concrete or brickwork, missing/damaged roof shingles, or water damage under eaves or soffits. Schedule repairs promptly.
    • Inspect your wood siding and trim for paint that is lifting or peeling, for splitting wood or areas where the wood grain is separating ("checking") from water getting into the wood.
    • Have a professional painter waterproof and paint your wood siding or power wash your vinyl or aluminum siding.
    • Check foundation walls, floors, concrete, and masonry for cracking, heaving, or deterioration.
    • Hook up the garden hose and inspect it for cracks or leaks. Replace old washers.
    • Check lawn sprinkler system for leaky valves and exposed lines.
    • Clean the garage and bring out the garden tools and lawn mower.
    • Wash exterior windows, screens, and windowsills; repair any winter damage.
    • Remove storm windows or doors, and replace with clean screens. Tighten or repair any loose or damaged frames and repaint; replace broken, worn, or missing hardware; tighten and lubricate door hinges and closers.
    • Power wash, sand and reseal your deck before it is exposed to the heat. Hammer in any loose nails, or replace them with galvanized deck screws. Replace any broken boards or rails.
    • If you are thinking of adding a porch or deck, now is the time to call a professional.
    • Set up patio furniture.
    • Check antenna and satellite dish supports.
    • Clear away fallen branches and leaves. Use a mulching mower to spread clippings evenly over the lawn and fertilize naturally. Loosen the soil around perennials; plant annuals or a vegetable garden. Prune shrubs and trees. Spread mulch around shrubs and flowerbeds for a clean looking yard.
    • Remove debris that may have settled in gutters during winter.
    • Ensure that the downspouts are directing water away from the foundation of your house.
    • Check the central air-conditioning unit for debris and obstructions; vacuum the main condenser coil on top of the unit.

    Brakes

Your brakes are a critical function on the car. Replacement of your brakes depends largely on your driving habits and the quality of the brake pads.

Brake pads need to be replaced due to uneven wear, and a breakdown of the material. Each time you break it causes friction and heating – by selective a higher quality material, such as ceramic, you will have longer lasting brakes.

Some signs that your brake pads need replacing are:

    • Vibrating
    • Squealing
    • Grunt sound when you stop
    • Longer distance required for braking (sometimes known as spongy brakes)

It is very important that you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your vehicle. Check the owner’s manual for the scheduled brake inspection (given in km or age of your vehicle).
