The Phone Message

How often do you come home to a beeping answering machine that's filled with messages from a friend who ran out of time and left multiple messages to finish their story, or worse … phone numbers said at such high speeds that you still don't catch what they said after multiple tries.

Before you make a call, don't be suprised to get an answering machine. The most effective messages are consise and include your name, the day of the call, the reason you called (remember to keep it brief!) and be sure to repeat your number twice.

This month, we feature a great list of questions put together by Don Bassindale when considering the purchase of a condo. We also have an informative article on personal care services by Kerry Jarvi from Pathway Care Services.

What is Hospice Palliative and Recuperative Care?

Hospice palliative care is designed to “relieve suffering and improve quality of life throughout an illness and bereavement experience, so that patients and families can realize their full potential to live even when they are dying.”

Hospice palliative care is designed to meet all of a clients needs; physical, spiritual, and emotional, throughout a terminal illness. Every person has a different idea of death and dying, hospice palliative care works to meet each person where they are. The process is very personal and individualized.

“Hospice palliative care is appropriate for any patient and their family living with, or at risk of developing, a life-threatening illness due to any diagnosis, with any prognosis, regardless of age, and at any time they have unmet expectations and/or needs and are prepared to accept care.” Hospice palliative care does not intend to prolong life nor hasten death but to make clients more comfortable at such a difficult time.

What is Recuperative Care?

Recuperative care programs are a time specific care plan that is to respond to a client's need after a surgery or joint replacement, or during and after chemotherapy or radiation treatments. It allows clients to receive additional support in their home while they recuperate.

The benefits of in Home Care

Each client and their family is assigned a small care team to meet their needs. For palliative care, this includes a home maker, personal support workers and registered nursing staff. Day to day care includes running errands to case management. Small care teams allow us to meet the changing needs of our client's efficiently and effectively.

Examples of in home support are:

  • grocery shopping and meal preparation
  • house cleaning and laundry
  • event planning
  • bill paying
  • transportation
  • pet care, going for walks
  • bathing, dressing, grooming, skin care, hygiene
  • turning
  • suggesting therapies
  • medication follow-up and symptom control

Clients and their families also have the option of meeting with support staff such as bereavement counselors, gerontologists, and social workers.

Goal Specific

When looking for in home care of any kind, it is vital that all care is goal specific. Each client should have a care plan that addresses this goal. Goals will vary depending on each client's diagnosis/prognosis. As an example, if a client has a terminal diagnosis, their goals may be to maximize comfort, take care of unfinished business and ensure their loved ones are able to spend quality time with them.

Goals should be revisited through out the care process to ensure they are being met and to add new goals.

Why choose to supplement Government funded programs?

Private services can allow for continuity in care, limit the number of staff through the client's home, enable clients and their families to build a rapport with the staff, provide 24 hour support, and the ability to respond quickly and efficiently to the ever changing needs of those who are terminally ill.

Clients have greater freedom to choose how much service they want, when and especially where – within a long term facility or at home. They are in control of their lives right through the end of their lives.

When Buying a Condo, Be Condo Knowledgeable

How do I know if the real estate sales rep I am considering using for my transaction is condo knowledgeable?

Ask questions! Here are some questions that a condo knowledgeable real estate sales rep should be able to answer.

  • What is a status certificate & why is it the most important document to obtain when buying a condominium?
  • What does it tell you?
  • How long does it take to get one?
  • How do I get one?
  • Who should review it?
  • Are there any current special assessments?
  • What does the condo fee cover?
  • Should I be getting an inspection by a home inspector?
  • Does the building allow pets?
  • What amenities does the building or complex offer?
  • How many parking spaces are there and where are they located?
  • Is there a locker?
  • How old is the building?
  • How many elevators are there?
  • How many units in the building are rented?
  • Do they recommend talking to people in the elevator, hallway, parking lot? They should!
  • Is the building or complex managed by an outside professional management company or self-managed?

This is the biggest investment you may ever make in your life. Use someone highly recommended or interview the sales professional to be sure they understand and are knowledgeable on condos. Buying a condominium is quite different than buying a house. When you buy a condo you are buying a community and you should be sure to use someone knowledgeable in this area of expertise.
