Message from the Editor

This fall we were pleased to present a diverse group of talented artists and artisans from the local area with original and one-of-a-kind gift items.  We had an opportunity to host these events at the studios of the artisans and also the Junction Cafe in Hamilton. We would like to extend a special thank you to everyone who attended. If you are still looking for great gift ideas, visit our Artists & Artisan category!

Most small businesses rely on word-of-mouth recommendations from clients, friends and associates. Christmas is a time to share your great experiences and I Highly Recommend makes it easy to share recommendations with others: our search function will help you locate reliable local businesses to serve you. If there is a business you would highly recommend, please let us know!

This month, we feature articles from our Editor and Safety Tips from Best Nursing Agency. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Winter Hazards: Seniors and Falls

Not only are Seniors at higher risk for falls, but winter brings increased hazards.

Here are a few pointers that should be considered to keep you safe. Remember that winter falls can lead to fractures, pain and suffering and sometimes lasting disability.

  • Make arrangements for someone to clean walkways and driveways. Every winter there are numerous Seniors who suffer heart attacks removing heavy snow.
  • Have salt handy to spread on slippery steps and walkways.
  • Cancel appointments during inclement weather. Don't risk hazardous road conditions.
  • Stock up on staples so that you don't have to go out during bad weather. Some grocery stores will deliver your order.
  • Wear safe non-slip boots when outside and dress appropriately for cold weather.
  • Have a winter safety kit in your car including flares, blankets and Granola bars. Let someone know where you are going and expected arrival time.
  • Ensure that you eat nutritious meals and drink plenty of fluids. The dry heat indoors can cause dehydration.
  • Exercise to maintain muscle and bone strength. Mall walking is good alternative to walking outdoors.

Christmas Retail Tips

Some say its no coincidence that “Butter Ball” and “Shopping Mall” just happen to rhyme. Estimates say that 70% of a family's disposable income is spent during the few weeks between Thanksgiving (US) and Christmas. This means the grand total of yearly sales are up or down within only five weeks of the whole year. Every big box and major retailer knows that. They plan all year for that critical time.

Not many small, independent retailers leverage those few weeks. Instead they consider it to be “business as usual.” So gather your staff and consider the following:

  • Everyone who enters your business will be greeted immediately.
  • Christmas decorations will embellish the interior of the store.
  • Christmas music will be played … ad nauseam.
  • Daily operations can wait; the customer is the ONLY focus.
  • The coffee pot will be filled regularly.
  • Candy or cookies will be next to every cash register.
  • Gift-wrapping services will be encouraged.
  • Gift certificate purchases will be encouraged.
  • Extend your hours.
  • Smiles are mandatory because customers will be short-tempered and stressed.
  • Be creative; you are acting as Santa's elves.
